Google Launches a Beta Channel for Android WebView

Android apps use a technology called WebViewto show HTML content without forcing you to open a browser; think of all those times an app loads a mini-window to ask for permission to link to your Facebook or Twitter account.

In Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google lets users update WebView separately from the core OS. As of today, developers can access a new beta channel to try the newest versions of WebView and provide feedback.

Updates to WebView bring bug fixes, new APIs and updates to the Chromium engine. If you use WebView for your app, signing up for the beta channel can give you a head start for what to expect as the technology develops.

If you want to sign up, join Google’s beta community, and you’ll be able to find the app in the Play Store. The first version to come up in the beta channel will be based on Chrome 40.
